A preliminary study suggests that indulging in drinking dark chocolate improves vision. The scientists found that adults who took a dark chocolate bar saw a significant increase in visual clarity and contrast sensitivity within 2 hours after consumption.

To the delight of chocolate lovers, dark chocolate has begun to develop an enormous reputation as a healthy food when consumed in moderation (this should never be forgotten). It contains antioxidants called flavonoids, which are compounds derived from plants that can exert a series of positive effects, such as the reduction of inflammation in the body.

It is believed that these flavonoids are mainly responsible for some of the possible health benefits of consuming dark chocolate, which include better cognitive functioning and better heart health.

Group Of Scientists Suggests that Dark Chocolate Improves vision.

The researchers reached their conclusions by testing the effects of dark chocolate on the vision of 30 healthy adults, nine men and 21 women, who had an average age of 26 years. None of the subjects had a history of eye disease.

In two separate sessions, each participant was required to consume a small tablet of dark chocolate containing 316.3 milligrams of flavonoids or a small chocolate milk bar containing only 40 milligrams of flavonoids. During the test, the participants were not told what type of chocolate they consumed in each session.

Approximately 2 hours after consuming chocolate, all subjects underwent visual tests.

The results revealed an improvement in the sensitivity of visual contrast – or the ability to read small and large letters with different variations – after subjects consumed dark chocolate, compared to when they drank milk chocolate.

The participants also experienced a slight improvement in visual acuity, that is, the clarity of vision, after consumption of dark chocolate. However, the researchers note that it is not clear how long these visual improvements last.

“The reported findings suggest that a single dose of dark chocolate improves the visibility of small low contrast lenses in 2 hours compared with milk chocolate, but the duration of this difference and the clinical relevance remains uncertain,” Jeff explains. C. Rabin, from the Rosenberg School of Optometry of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio (USA) and co-author of the work.

More research is needed

Although the study could not identify the reasons why the intake of dark chocolate can improve vision, the researchers propose some theories.

The researchers also note some limitations for their study. For example, they admit that participants may have known the type of chocolate they were consuming based on their taste, and this may have influenced the results.

In conclusion, the team believes that more studies are needed to evaluate that eating dark chocolate improves vision.

Black chocolate improves the neuroplasticity of the brain

New studies shed light on how dark chocolate could improve the health of our mind and strengthen our immune system. Two small studies, recently presented at Experimental Biology 2018, held in San Diego, California, and to be published in The FASEB Journal, offer more evidence of how dark chocolate can be good for us.

Both studies were led by Lee Berk and concluded that eating a small amount of dark chocolate with 70% could have positive effects on the brain and immune system.

“An increase in the retina, the visual pathway, and cerebral blood flow could be contributing, improving the bioavailability of oxygen and nutrients in metabolically active sites,” the authors write.
